The term Digital Marketing was first used in the 1990s.The web 1.0 entitled users to dig information from internet what they wanted but they did'nt permitted users to share information.Till that time users were not aware of digital platforms.People were not confident that internet will help them to grow their business or not.
In 1993, Hotwired (the first commercial magzine) acquired few banner ads for advertisements.In 1994, they entered into digital marketing.In the same year Yahoo came into business.
Also known as "Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web" after its founder Jerry Yang, Yahoo received close to 1 million hits within the first year.This brought changes in digital market.Tools for search engines like HotBot, LookSmart, and Alexa came in 1996.
In 1998 came Google and Microsoft launched MSN.
Finally, in 2006 digital marketing made it place in organizations when search engine traffic was reported to have grown to about 6.4 billion in a single month.Google launched products such as Adwords, AdSense etc and became a major player in the world of business.
Then came Web2.0 which allowed users to interact and participate with other users and businesses.By 2004, internet advertising and marketing in the US alone brought in around $2.9 billion.
Soon,social networking sites made it place in market. MySpace was the first social networking site to arrive, soon followed by Facebook.
